Schubert and Bach
Pimlico Chorus will be performing Schubert ‘Mass No. 2 in G Major’ and Bach ‘Cantata for Palm Sunday’ performed alongside an Sinfonia Smith Square, and professional soloists.
Bach Cantata 12 for Palm Sunday describes the sorrow to be felt after the crucifixion, with only faith in God's purpose to alleviate the pain. In the Gospel, Jesus is telling the disciples that he must take his leave of them but that soon he shall return.
The piece encompasses a sinfonia, followed by a chorus and recitative. After which there follow three arias before the closing chorale. The final aria, for tenor has a contemplative in mood and accompanied by a trumpet wistfully playing the chorale melody Jesu, meine Freude above the vocal line. The cantata closes with a fine chorale setting with the trumpet's counter melody soaring above
Mass No. 2 in G major was composed in less than a week in early March 1815 and remains the best known of his three short settings, or missae breves. It was not printed until 1845, some years after Schubert's death, and until then remained one of his less-noted compositions. The mass consists of six movements, which form a devotional mood.
